Beginners Guide And Tutorial
This beginners guide and tutorial will help you get started with your website project
from scratch, and then help you fast track your site into the search engines. As you
can see, my website is very simple and to the point. I could have added much more
information, but that would have defeated my websites theme of, (beginners simplicity)

My website covers the basic fundamentals of content creation, keyword research,
website optimization, and search engine optimization, so that you can have a starting
point to work with. You can learn advanced information on these topics as your building
your site, and then make changes as you go. Lets start process in it's natural order.

HTML editors vs Sitebuilders.

If you do not have any knowledge of HTML coding, or no experience using a graphics
editor, then I suggest you start out using a sitebuilder like this one. All the coding is
embedded into the editor, and all you do is point and click, drop and drag, copy and
paste. Most sitebuilders are very easy to use, and offer plenty of pre-made templates.

I chose Yahoo sitebuilder because for me, it was the easiest one to use, it offers good
quality features at a very low cost, and they offer a $100.00 credit to put towards a pay
per click campaign to help you draw traffic to your site.
Top Rated Sitebuilders

The advantages of using an HTML editor, and a graphics editor, is that you can create
your own custom look and feel, and some pretty cool header graphics for your home
page. You have heard the phrase that says "A picture speaks a thousand words"
well a good header graphic can do the same thing for your website.

Planning Your Website Content

The best teacher is hands on experience. You can start the ball rolling by writing down
some ideas for your website content. Start with the main subject or topic for your site.
What is your site about. Once you have decided on your sites main topic, start writing
down ideas for sub topics that are directly related to the main topic.

Take this site for example. The main topic is about building websites, and the sub topics
are website optimization, search engine optimization, webmaster tools, web directories,
link popularity, and page rank. All of my sub topics are relevant to my main topic, and
each page stays on topic for the subject of focus.

By writing out your ideas on paper, you create a resource for possible keywords, and it
will help you keep your thoughts more organized. Its easy to forget things once you get
going, so taking notes will always prove to be a time worthy action. Once you choose
your main topic, and sub topics, you will be ready to start your
keyword research.

It's very important that you use a top quality keyword research tool to create your list.
Anything less than the best, is just not good enough to get the job done right, Period.
By far, the most important aspects of building a successful website are

  • The keywords you choose for your website content
  • The quality of content that you write based around those words.
  • The way you construct, and layout your pages.

Start by creating a list of keywords and phrases that are the most relevant, and that
best describe each one of your topics. Next, enter them into your keyword research tool.
A good keyword tool will give you back a large list of words and phrases that all contain
your main keyword, and it will also give you with the supply and demand data.

Here are the top rated
keyword tools  I personally recommend Wordtracker.

DO NOT choose your domain name until you have completed your keyword research.
This is very important. You don't know what your best keywords will be until you have
completed your master keyword list. If you choose your domain first, you may miss out
on a more relevant choice from your keywords list.
Relevance is everything

Your domain name should be a direct reflection of your websites main theme. Your main
theme will be determined by your best keywords. Including your best keywords within
your domain name, will help boost your website in the search engine results later on in
the future, once your site is established.

The most important part of keyword research is to analyze the supply and demand
data for each one of your keywords and keyword phrases. Keyword supply means the
number of websites that are using a keyword or keyword phrase. Keyword demand is
the number of searches that were processed for a particular keyword or phrase.

Your job is to put together a list of keywords and phrases that have a good search
volume, and hopefully a lower supply volume. You can achieve this goal by coming up
with alternative keywords and phrases for your websites main topics, instead of using
the more general popular keywords that everyone else uses.

It is easier to rank high in the search results using 3 and 4 word phrases, than it is
with single keywords, and 2 word phrases. You can blend in the more popular keywords
throughout your page text. This could help you list higher in the search results for your
niche phrase. If you find yourself bound for the more competitive words, go with it.

After you have completed your keyword research, and generated your master keyword
list, you may very well find yourself using different keywords for your main topics than
you had originally planned on, and you could also end up finding the perfect keywords
for your domain name. Keywords that accurately describe your website are best.

The most important thing you can do once you have your master keyword list created,
is to start entering each one of your keywords and phrases into googles search engine,
and evaluate the top 30 websites listed in the search results. These are the websites
that you are competing with. You may get some good ideas for your own website.

If you have a specialized niche that is not so general, you will have a much easier time
achieving a good listing in the search results, just as long as there is some demand for
information pertaining to that niche. Remember that no demand, equals no traffic. If no
one is searching for the keywords that your site is focused on, you have nothing.

Satisfying the search engines, and your visitors

Your web pages receive merit from the search engines based on a number of factors.

  • The quality, and relevance of information you provide for your topics.
  • Unique and original content.
  • In bound links pointing to your site from established authority websites.
  • The quality of resources that you provide.
  • The quantity of all the above.

Content And Page Layout

Organizing your content and constructing your web pages, is where the rubber meets
the road. This has definitely been my greatest challenge so far. You can have the best
information about any subject or topic on your website, but if it's all just tossed together
like a salad, then your visitors make look right by it, and click away.

Statistics show that you only have about 5 seconds to grab a visitors attention, once
they land on your site from a search engine. Your page title should be large, bold, and
very descriptive of the page content, and your headlines need to be compelling enough
to make your visitor want to read the information that follows them.

Creating a well designed header graphic that accurately depicts your page content, can
really complement your page title, and give your visitor a visual connection to your
page content. Statistics show that websites which use header graphics, out perform
those that don't. I guess that means that visual affects are very powerful.

Using proper spacing between paragraphs, aligning text links and images with your
page text, and making good usage of white space is very important to creating a good
look and feel for your website. Everything should look nice, and neat, and even. At first
this may seem a little difficult, but as you progress, you will get better at it.

Think of your website as a mini directory. Your home page is the hub of your site, which
leads to all types of information and resources pertaining to a particular subject matter,
or topic. Your secondary pages are category pages, that lead to sub category pages,
all of which are directly related to the main theme of your website.

Your website receives merit from your visitors by providing quality information and
good  resources, along with an easily navigated website, which makes for a user
friendly experience.
